CBCT

What is CBCT and what is it used for in dentistry?
CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) is a diagnostic imaging technology that uses a cone-shaped X-ray beam to generate high-resolution three-dimensional images of dental, bony, and craniofacial structures.
Unlike conventional CT scanning, CBCT was specifically developed for the field of dentistry and maxillofacial surgery.
At Clínica Dr. Paulo Cardozo in Benavente, CBCT is used as an advanced supplementary examination whenever the diagnosis requires a level of detail beyond what conventional X-rays can provide.
The great advantage of CBCT is its ability to provide three-dimensional images with a significantly lower radiation dose than conventional CT scanning, making it safer for the patient.

“CBCT has transformed the way we diagnose and plan treatments. Seeing in three dimensions what we previously only saw in two allows us to offer unmatched precision and safety.”
How the CBCT Scan Works
The CBCT examination is quick and non-invasive, using the latest technology to carry out the scan comfortably, with a low radiation dose and immediate results in three-dimensional format.

Patient Preparation
The patient removes all metal objects from the neck upwards, including earrings, necklaces, glasses, piercings, and removable dentures. These objects can cause interference in the image. A protective apron is fitted and the patient is directed to the CBCT unit.
Positioning next to the equipment
The patient stands or sits, resting their chin on a stabilising support. The technician adjusts the height and position of the unit to ensure the field of view covers exactly the area to be examined, avoiding unnecessary radiation exposure.
Three-Dimensional Image Acquisition
The unit rotates 360 degrees around the patient's head in a single rotation lasting approximately 15 to 20 seconds. During this process, hundreds of images are captured and processed by software to generate a complete three-dimensional reconstruction.
3D Processing and Analysis
The captured images are processed by the software into a 3D model that can be viewed in axial, coronal, and sagittal cross-sections. The dentist analyses the three-dimensional volume, being able to rotate, enlarge, and measure the structures. The image is stored digitally.

Frequently asked questions
about the CBCT examination
What is a dental CBCT scan?
This is a cone beam CT scan that generates detailed 3D images of the teeth, jaws, and craniofacial structures using a low radiation dose.
What is the difference compared to a standard CT scan?
CBCT was designed specifically for dentistry and emits up to six times less radiation than conventional CT, with equal or greater resolution.
Is the examination painful or invasive?
No. CBCT is a completely painless and non-invasive examination. The patient simply remains still for approximately twenty seconds.
How long does the CBCT examination take?
Image acquisition takes approximately 20 seconds. Including preparation and positioning, the entire process takes around ten minutes.
Is CBCT safe for my health?
Yes. The radiation dose from CBCT is significantly lower than that of conventional CT scanning, and all protective measures are used during the examination.
When is a CBCT scan necessary?
When the diagnosis requires three-dimensional imaging, namely for implants, oral surgery, impacted teeth, or complex pathologies.
Can I have a CBCT during pregnancy?
It is recommended to avoid any radiation-based examination during pregnancy, except in emergency situations. Always inform your dentist.
How are the results presented?
The results are displayed as a 3D model on the monitor, allowing structures to be viewed in all planes: axial, coronal, and sagittal.
Do you carry out CBCT scans at your clinic?
Yes. Clínica Dr. Paulo Cardozo has state-of-the-art CBCT equipment for advanced diagnostics across all specialities.
