Orthopantomography

What is a panoramic X-ray (OPG) and what is it used for?
The panoramic X-ray (OPG), also known as an orthopantomogram, is a diagnostic imaging examination that allows the following to be visualised in a single radiograph:
• both dental arches, upper and lower,
• adjacent anatomical structures, such as the jaw,
• the maxillary sinuses, and
• the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).
It is a fundamental examination in dentistry and is frequently the first to be requested by the dentist, as it provides a comprehensive overview of the patient's oral health status.
The digital panoramic X-ray (OPG) used at Clínica Médica Dentária Dr. Paulo Cardozo provides high-resolution images with a significantly reduced radiation dose compared to traditional analogue methods.

“A panoramic X-ray (OPG) is the cornerstone of any sound dental diagnosis. At our clinic, we invest in state-of-the-art digital technology to offer patients high-quality images with maximum comfort and safety.”
How the panoramic X-ray (OPG) examination works
The panoramic X-ray (OPG) is simple, quick, and completely painless, providing high-resolution panoramic images with minimal radiation exposure for the patient.

Patient Preparation
The patient is asked to remove all metal objects from the head and neck area, such as earrings, necklaces, piercings, and removable dentures. A lead protective apron is then fitted to ensure safety during the examination, and the technician positions the patient standing beside the panoramic X-ray unit — the OPG machine.

Positioning in the Orthopantomograph
The patient rests their chin on a dedicated support and gently bites on a disposable plastic piece that helps to stabilise their position. The technician adjusts the panoramic X-ray (OPG) equipment to the patient's anatomy to ensure correct alignment of the dental arches. It is essential that the patient remains completely still during image capture.

Panoramic Image Capture
The arm of the OPG unit rotates slowly around the patient's head for approximately 15 to 30 seconds and captures a continuous image of the dental arches. The process is completely painless and silent. The digital image is generated in real time and is immediately available for analysis by the dentist on the surgery monitor.

Clinical Analysis and Diagnosis
The dentist analyses the digital panoramic X-ray (OPG) on screen, assessing the position of the teeth, bone structure, possible lesions, cysts, or other changes. The image is stored in the patient's digital clinical record and can be compared with previous examinations to monitor the evolution of the oral health status.

Frequently asked questions
about the orthopantomography examination
What is an orthopantomogram?
It is a panoramic X-ray that shows both dental arches, the jaws, and surrounding structures in a single diagnostic image.
Is a panoramic X-ray painful?
No. A panoramic X-ray (OPG) is a completely painless and non-invasive examination, carried out during a dental appointment by our dentists.
How long does the examination take?
The examination takes approximately 30 seconds. You will always be accompanied by our dentists.
Is the examination safe for children?
Yes, digital panoramic X-ray (OPG) is safe for children. The radiation dose is very low, and age-appropriate protection is used.
Can I have the examination if I am pregnant?
In general, it is recommended to avoid X-ray examinations during pregnancy, unless there is an urgent clinical indication. Always inform our dentists of your situation.
Do I need to prepare for the examination?
For the panoramic X-ray (OPG), you only need to remove any metal objects. No prior preparation is required. Our dentists will guide you throughout.
How often should I repeat the examination?
The frequency depends on each clinical case. The dentist will recommend the ideal frequency based on the current state of your oral health.
