The detailed intraoral X-ray that sees what is hidden
The periapical X-ray is the most widely used intraoral examination in dentistry. It allows the complete structure of each tooth to be visualised in detail.

What is a periapical X-ray and what is it used for?
The periapical X-ray, also known as a periapical radiograph, is an intraoral diagnostic examination that allows detailed visualisation of the complete anatomy of one or more teeth — from the crown to the root tip — as well as the surrounding anatomical structures, including the alveolar bone and the periodontal ligament.
This examination is the most frequently performed in the dental surgery and is an indispensable tool for diagnosing various oral conditions.
At Clínica Médica Dentária Dr. Paulo Cardozo, our dentists use digital periapical X-rays because they offer high-resolution images with a significantly lower radiation dose than conventional methods.

“A periapical X-ray is like a high-precision magnifying glass. It allows our dentists to see what the clinical eye alone cannot detect, ensuring more accurate diagnoses and safer treatments.”
How the periapical X-ray examination works
The periapical X-ray is a simple and quick examination, using the latest digital intraoral sensors to capture high-resolution images with minimal radiation exposure.

Preparation and Protection
The patient is asked to remove any metal objects from the head and neck area. A lead apron is fitted to protect the body during the examination. The technician selects the appropriate digital sensor for the area to be examined and prepares the X-ray equipment.
Placement of the Intraoral Sensor
A small digital sensor, protected by a disposable cover, is positioned inside the patient's mouth, close to the area to be examined.
The patient gently bites on a holder that keeps the sensor in the correct position during the radiographic image capture.
Image Capture and Acquisition
The X-ray tube is directed towards the area to be examined and the exposure is taken. The exposure lasts less than one second and is entirely painless. The digital image appears immediately on the surgery monitor, allowing the dentist to verify the quality of the image and proceed with the clinical analysis.
Analysis and Digital Storage
The dentist assesses the image on the screen, adjusting the contrast and brightness to examine each structure in detail. The X-ray is stored in the patient's digital clinical record and can be accessed at any time and shared with other specialists if necessary.

Frequently asked questions
about the periapical radiograph examination
What is a periapical radiograph?
This is an intraoral X-ray taken by the dentist, which shows the complete structure of two to three teeth, from the crown to the root, including the supporting bone.
Does the examination cause pain or discomfort?
No. The periapical X-ray is completely painless. Placing the sensor inside the mouth may cause slight discomfort, but this lasts only a few seconds.
How long does it take to carry out?
The examination is very quick. Our dentists take approximately one minute, including sensor placement and taking the X-ray.
Is a periapical radiograph safe?
Yes. Digital X-rays use a very low radiation dose, and our dental team protects the patient with lead shields.
Can I have this examination during pregnancy?
In cases of urgent clinical need, the examination can be carried out with appropriate protection. Always inform our dentists if you are pregnant.
What is the difference compared to a panoramic X-ray?
The periapical X-ray focuses on two to three teeth in great detail. The panoramic X-ray (OPG), on the other hand, offers a panoramic view of the entire mouth.
How many radiographs are needed?
It depends on the diagnosis. Only one may be needed, or up to fourteen for a full periapical survey of the entire dental arch.
Are the results of a periapical radiograph immediate?
Yes. With digital technology, the image is generated in real time on the monitor and analysed immediately by the dentist during the appointment.
Do you offer digital periapical radiography?
Yes. At Clínica Dr. Paulo Cardozo we exclusively use digital X-rays, offering higher image quality and significantly less radiation.
